Bloomsburg University CGA Starts #Huskies4Houston Relief Effort

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Community Government Association (CGA), the student government organization of the university, is organizing a relief effort for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

CGA president, Joar Dahn, like everyone else, saw the devastation caused by the flooding in the last few days. Dahn met with CGA leadership this week and organized a donation page through the Bloomsburg University Foundation with the goal of raising $10,000 for the relief effort. Funds collected by the CGA office will be sent to verified Texas relief efforts such as food banks and the Red Cross with 100 percent of donations going to the relief efforts.

The link to donate is TakeActionBU.org/Huskies4Houston.

“When I was watching what was happening in Houston I knew our group had to take action,” said Dahn. “CGA does many service projects during the year, the biggest being The Big Event here in Bloomsburg. We’ve created the #Huskies4Houston to help draw attention to the relief effort we have started. I am hoping everyone will be able to donate.”

In addition to raising monetary donations, university employees will also be collecting donations of cleaning supplies, new blankets, and clothing, which will be sent to coordinating organizations in the Houston area. Items may be dropped off at the Nelson Field House, the Kehr Union Building or at boxes in locations to be set up around campus.

The BU athletic department and Huskies sports teams will also be involved in the relief effort. Through an initiative with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) at every home PSAC event this weekend, member institutions take up collections of money to donate to the Red Cross to support the hurricane victims. On Friday, BU will be hosting a men’s and women’s cross country meet at 5:30 p.m. and men’s soccer at 7 p.m. On Saturday the football team opens its season at noon at Redman Stadium.

Also, in another effort from BU Athletics, Bloomsburg University student-athletes will be collecting BU shirts to be sent to University of Houston head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. The items will be distributed to the proper agencies in the Houston area.
