BU Foundation announces football scholarship campaign

To build on “118 years of true grit on the football field,” the Bloomsburg University Foundation has announced “First and Goal,” a $2 million endowed scholarship campaign to benefit the football program at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

Since the Bloomsburg football's first game in 1892, it has been known for the building of character, integrity, preparedness and leadership. Those traits have been nurtured over the years in Bloomsburg history led by legendary coaches Robert Redman (1947 to 1951); George Landis(1981 to 1985); and current coach Danny Hale (1993 to the present).

“The Division II student-athlete is able to compete at a high level on the playing field and excel in the classroom,” said BU President David Soltz. “We want to prepare our players for new levels of success on the field, in their careers, and in their personal lives.”

Funds raised through the “First and Goal” campaign, will make an additional $80,000 to
$100,000 in scholarship funds available each year. This increase in scholarship funding allows head coach Hale and his staff to continue this legacy for years to come. The leadership committee is led by co-chairs Gerald Frey '71 and Steph Pettit '89, a former player under Landis.

The campaign is more than halfway to its goal thanks to a leadership gift of $500,000 from Jahri Evans '07, former All-American and current NFL All-Pro, and other gifts. Evans, a guard with the New Orleans Saints, was a two-time All-American and two-time finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award as the top lineman in Division II for the Huskies. He helped lead the team to an undefeated regular season and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East title.

“Coach Hale has been more to me than just a football coach,” said Evans. “He believed in me and gave me a chance to play football and get a great education when others were not willing do so. If it were not for coach Hale and his staff I would not be where I am today. My gift to the campaign is to give others the same opportunity and help make BU football the best it can be.”

The field at Redman Stadium will be named in honor of Danny Hale at the conclusion of the campaign in spring 2012. Endowed scholarships of $25,000 or more will be recognized as part of the campaign. Gifts of $5,000 or more will be recognized on a dedication plaque at the entrance to the field.
