BU Officially Launches Capital Campaign

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and the Bloomsburg University Foundation officially launched It’s Personal: The Campaign for Bloomsburg University on Friday, Oct. 16. The capital campaign is the largest of its kind in BU’s history, with a goal to raise $50 million.

“Tonight, we celebrate our opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of current and future Bloomsburg University students,” said BU President David Soltz.

The weekend’s launch of the campaign signifies the beginning of its public phase, following a five-year private phase.

“Since July 2010, more than 14,800 individuals and organizations have made financial gifts in support of Bloomsburg University and the It’s Personal campaign,” Soltz said.

New ImagePresident Soltz recruited Roongo, BU’s mascot, and several members of the men’s tennis and the women’s basketball teams to help announce the amount raised to date during the private phase of the campaign, using their jersey numbers to reveal the total.

“As a result of the thousands of contributions we’ve received,” said Soltz, “we have raised $36,437,646.”

The university’s intentions for recently repairing the Carver Hall bell were also revealed during the campaign launch. The bell was originally placed in the tower atop Carver Hall in 1867 after the university’s first president, Henry Carver, challenged three students to raise $1,100 to finance its purchase. They completed the task in just one day. Since Oct. 6, the bell has pealed each day at noon.

“After being silent for 25 years, the bell located atop Carver Hall has finally rung again,” Soltz said, “Throughout the It’s Personal campaign, we will continue to ring the Carver Hall bell to mark significant milestones as a symbol of the very powerful and personal nature of giving.”
