Celebrating the Impact of Scholarships

The bell above Carver Hall recently rang to celebrate The Bloomsburg University Foundation’s Scholarship Luncheon on Sunday, April 2 in the Kehr Union Ballroom.

This year, more than 60 scholarship recipients had the opportunity to make a personal connection with their donors who invested in their futures and thank them for their generosity.

In addition to hearing remarks from David Soltz, Ph.D., Univeristy President and Erik Evans, Vice President of University Advancement, donors and recipients also heard the personal stories of benefactor, Nancy Vasta '97/'98M, VP, Cigna and Secretary of the Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees and Daniel Schellhamer '16/'17M, scholarship recipient.

Vasta spoke about her own personal journey at Bloosmburg University and why she felt compelled to create a scholarship, not only to support BU’s mission, but also because as a scholarship recipient herself, she knows how big the impact can be. Vasta’s family scholarship, the Mary L. Reynolds Scholarship, which was created in her mother-in-law’s honor also helps her to continue her family’s legacy by helping others.

Schellhamer shared what his scholarship has meant to him. He reminded his fellow recipients and donors that while the financial aspect of receiving a scholarship is a great help, the impact of that gift can often be much greater. For Schellhamer, it meant gaining a mentor in Joseph Jacques, his scholarship donor who through conversation and guidance has helped Daniel Discover his passion and choose the right career path.

Since the beginning of the It’s Personal Campaign in 2010, 129 new scholarships have been created and more than $6M has been distributed to thousands of deserving BU students. Each year, donors look forward to attending the Scholarship Luncheon to meet the recipients and learn about how their scholarships have made a difference in their lives.
