Spotlight on Scholarships

Tara Baney '21

From the time Tara Baney ’21 stepped foot on campus at Bloomsburg University  as  a high school junior, the Howard, Pa., native knew she wanted to be a Husky.

When she arrived at BU as a freshman two years ago, she realized that dream and began to pursue her education, as an exercise science major. She was also excited to continue her career as a member of the BU softball team.

In the fall of her sophomore year, Tara celebrated another milestone as a Husky student-athlete when she learned she was selected to receive the Hall of Fame Scholarship. This scholarship is made available through the Husky Scholarship Fund, thanks to donors who give annually to support BU student-athletes.

Tara exceeded her own expectations with a very successful spring  season as a pitcher in which she achieved All-PSAC Central Division honors after appearing in 26 games, starting 12 of them while throwing five complete games and one shutout.

She attributes a major portion of that success to receiving the scholarship. “This gift has impacted my life here,” Tara says. “I cannot express enough how grateful I am for this opportunity.”

The scholarship is allowing her to take part in additional activities outside of the classroom that mean a great deal to her both academically and on a personal level.

“In addition to playing softball, I am also a member of the Exercise Science Club and Colleges Against Cancer,” Tara adds. “Without the additional funding from this scholarship, I don’t know if I would be able to participate in these activities. Colleges Against Cancer has a special place in my heart. My mother was diagnosed with cancer when I was very young and still battles it today. This club allows me to give back to the American Cancer Society.”

Tara is excited to attack the 2019 season with hopes of leading the Huskies to the PSAC tournament in May.

“I have been so lucky to pursue my education here and to represent this great university as a student-athlete,” Tara says. “I come from a small town and Bloomsburg gives me that homey feel. I can’t thank the donors who supported this scholarship enough for helping me to make the most of my experience here.”
